Bobotie recipe

There are as many variations for Bobotie as there are cooks. The only secret is to find you own favourite amount and mix of spices

1 kg lean beef mince

1 large onion, chopped

2 Tbsp. oil

250ml (1 cup water)

250ml milk

2 slices thick bread

2 Tbsp. Chutney

4 Tbsp. lemon juice, fresh

3 cloves garlic, crushed

1 heaped Tbsp. Medium curry powder

1 tsp all spice

1 tsp. garam masala

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 eggs, beaten

1 tsp. turmeric

6 bay leaves


  1. Soak bread in water
  2. Sauté the onions and garlic in the oil until translucent
  3. In a large bowl add masala, turmeric, mince,  all spice and chutney and mix together
  4. Squeeze  water from bread  and add bread to mixture, followed by the garlic and onion mixture
  5. Spread mixture into small ovenproof dishes or ramekins (for individual portions) or casserole dish and place the leaves on the top
  6. Whisk together the 1 cup of milk with the eggs and pour on top of mixture
  7. Bake in oven at 180˚C for 40 – 50 minutes until set.

Serve with yellow rice
